I remember once….

when I was about 13 and my sister was about 7, we decided to walk up to our school to play on the playground and the soccer field. On the way there, there was a group of boys ahead and they were walking toward us. They seemed like they were feeling a bit rowdy and it was just us two. I felt the need to tell her to “not look scared.” I remember telling her that if she looked scared, she was more likely to look weak and get hurt. I remember telling her to have defiant eyes and stare them down if necessary. I remember she didn’t even question me, she didn’t even wonder why.

I’m not sure if it was the best advice for every situation but can we just take a minute to reflect on the fact that a 13 year old girl felt the need to coach a 7 year old girl on how to stay safe around men?

People say rape culture doesn’t exist but 13 year olds and 7 year olds see it plainly.

Wake the fuck up.
